Isn't it just a case that the entries in there WILL need refreshing after a 
reinstall? I've just been through the same exercise and wiped 'known_hosts' so 
I 
could rebuild it clean anyway. In the past I just deleted unused host entries, 
but you can't identify them at all nowadays?
