IF you can see an small spring inside the circumference of the seal, that
spring goes towards the bearing. If not, but one side seems more "open"
than the other side, the open side goes towards the bearing. I hope this
helps. Unfortunately, every manufacturer has their own idea of how to build
a seal, so they differ in design. Be sure to put grease around the seal
before putting the rotor on. Seal failure often occurs because of lack of
lubrication during the installation. If they run dry for even a few
seconds, they can get hot enough to cause permanent damage the seal. I
usually pack the open side of a seal with grease. This not only provides
adequate lubrication, but also keeps the spring from possibly jumping out of
place when hammering the new seal.
If you put the seals in wrong, do not reuse them! Chances are they will no
longer stay in place like they should.
