I put my windows in last week. I know it is a little messy, but I would apply 
the lithium grease to the vertical rails before putting them in. Once they are 
in, you really can't get the channels of the rails fully "wetted" unless you've 
got hands/arms/fingers of a 5 year old. Keep the grease in the channels of the 
rails where it's needed and it's not that messy.
