First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List

The paint shop just installed a set of those gaskets on my '68. They go
stepped side toward the panel, fitting around the slot's extruded steel,
and the side tabs fit into the ends of the center piece of steel in the
tail panel that crosses the middle of each lens. I had the tail panel
replaced, and the passenger-side gasket didn't quite seal (slight leak
when you blasted the lens straight-on with a hose) so they used a bit of
dum dum, too.

I bought these from CI and they're just foam/sponge gaskets. The originals are more like
a coal-tar based seal, a much better product. Are you suppose to glue these in place
before installing? Also, are they supposed to be installed flat side out or "stepped
side" out. The stepped side does not seem to have a purpose, i.e. it seems like they
should be flat on both sides.
Thanks,
Sheen
