Thanks for the help guys. I wanted to see if I needed to do anything
different before I mess something up. I soaked it in penetrating fluid (PB
Blaster)
and let it sit. It sounds like I'm on the right track, just need to keep
working at it.

its a tight fit. Not pressed fit. Start taping on it and use some
penetrating oil on the back side of the backing plate were the stud goes
into the spindle. You might be able to get vice grips on the lower
section and turn.

I used my impact wrench and had no problem getting the actual bolt out.
My
problem is the big pin or post on the inside/top of the backing plate
that the
brake shoes rest against and that the springs hook to. Should this part
be
free once the bolt is removed, is it threaded on or is it possibly a
press fit?
I cannot separate the spindle from the backing plate until I get this
loose.
I ran the top bolt partially in and hit it with a hammer to see if it
would
jar loose but had little to no luck.

I did exactly the same about two weeks ago and had the same problem.
My fix was soaking the bolt in penetrating oil followed by a 3 foot
Pipe extension on my 3/4" ratchet - that did the trick and
broke-loose
The bolt. Hope it works for you.
