IMHO that's too high that's why I swapped to a 2004R with OD on my 69 and I'm going to do the same on my 67 (which has a numerically higher rear end making it worst). I'll put the original tranny away for safe keeping and to bring the car back to original when needed.

2200 to 2500 or so would be much better at sustained highway speeds. Less wear and tear on the engine (and better gas mileage).

What is the "safe" or optimal RPM for the 400 at cruising speeds (55-65). According to my tach, I'm running at about 3500 RPM at that speed. Seems high to me, but I'm used to today's cars. Any thoughts? Am I killing the engine?
