I'm not sure how easilt the gear vendors unitmoves between gears. I think it used to be sort of a cumbersome process, but I believe they now have an electronic kit (more $$$ though). As other have said, I would probably just opt for a 2004R or 700R4. I did a 700R4 in my 82 Firebird and was pleased with it. I will say that the BEST reason in my book to put an overdrive tranny in your ride is the enjoyment factor. Frankly, it gets old driving on the freeway with everyone passing you in your "muscle" car because they are all driving 75mph (or more) and you hate taching it up at 3500 rpm ot do the same (especially given the likelihood that we all have aftermarket exhaust systems making it even louder, have "overheating" concerns, etc.). Gas savings on our often seldom driven rides aren't nearly as big a factor and frankly my mileage didn't improve that much when I went to an overdrive (not nearly what I thought it was going to). My preference (if I ever get my ride back on the road) is a TK0 600 5-speed overdrive. I get the benefit of the overdrive, control of a stick, and an extra gear for better gear-splitting...what's not to love...oh, wait - the price tag.

Hugo I was looking to utilise the extra ratios of the Gear Vendors unit for
the strip, and also to make it driveable on the highway again with my 3.73
rear. What sort of hp is the 200R4 good for?
Also wondering if anyone had fitted one to the 67-69 'bird and what mods
req'd. Otherwise a 4L80 truck box??
Thx, Jason

You install the gear vendors OD in place of the tail section of the tranny.
They are fairly expensive and you probably have to pull the tranny to
install it anyway. A 2004R is much cheaper and works really well. I
have one in my 69 vert and I'm getting ready to install one in my 67
400 to make it more highway friendly.
