RE the water pump...For the little bit of driving that is done with most of 
these cars it's not too much of an issue but one of the things that plain water 
does to water pumps is to cavitate the impeller.  Antifreeze has additives in 
it that protect it.

The coolant should stop the rust from progressing. The block itself is 
probably OK. Most rebuilders replace the steel freeze plugs with brass, 
so those should still be intact. The heater core and radiator are brass 
and copper, so no problem there. Not sure what plain water would do to 
the water pump.

What carb do you have?
