Answer to question about rust:  probably  from the original heater core.

Just a guess.

| There is still the question of why there was so much rust in the
| radiator of a freshly rebuilt engine. If you had a 50/50 mix in the
| cooling system, there shouldn't have been rust even with the engine
| sitting for an extended period.

| As for oil leaks, you may want to try snugging bolts in the oil and
| tranny pans to see if things are just a bit loose before you change
| gaskets. Cranking on bolts too hard may just make things worse, but
| looking for bolts that just need a little tightening may pay off.
