I don't think the cap is the problem. A vented cap allows air into the
tank as the fuel is drawn down. The fumes you smell are more likely from
a leak between the tank and the carb, or the carb itself. What carb do
you have?

I have a 69 bird with a old style non-vented cap with the the fuel tank
hose cming up next to the rear bumper and plain metal gas cap
Ive had this problem ever since I have owned the car
my garage stinks - not a fresh gas smell per se; but definetly gas - its
worse when its hotter weather
Is is possible to convert these cars over to vented systems? My wife is not
a happy person!
