I have read too many con's to soda blasting.  It is heavily promoted, but you
don't find the recognized shops using this process.

The issue is you have a chemically active powder that is as fine as flour that
gets into all the cracks that can cause the paint to fail later on.  Yes, it
supposedly is water soluable, so you can scrub it off with soap and water.  But
can you get the water out of the pinch welds and such fast enough to prevent
more rusting?  Without washing it off, it will cause paint failure.  With media
blasting, the dust will at worst, be encapsulated in the seam under the
primer.  Of course, media blasting has to be done with care, or the panel will
be damaged/warped.

Here are a few links.  This process is heavily promoted and debated.  I just
wouldn't risk it because the alternative of media blasting has no issue of
leaving behind a chemically active product.  At worst, media blasting leaves
behind inert debris.  I also wouldn't dip a project into chemical cleaner
unless the project is being completely disassembled so the pinch welds can be
cleaned up.  One never wants to trap chemicals in the pinch welds.  These cars
fail at the various pinch welds.  That is why I am so concerned over these
processes.

There are lots of arguements saying it provides a protective coating.  There
are other arguements that the stuff gets into seams and promotes rust while
inhibiting paint adhesion.  I wouldn't risk it because there are better
choices.

I glanced at a show on tv last week where they were soda blasting a pickup
truck, and it appeared the soda was dissolved in water before being sprayed
from the gun. They claimed it would also leave a film over the bare metal
surface that would prevent any flash rust until they were ready to do a final
cleaning to primer it.
