Jim,

A wire core welder will be much better around sheet metal but you may want to
think about a wire feed welder that is, or can be upgraded to, argon gas. We
picked up a used Lincoln Electric wire feed for our 67 coupe rust bucket but
ended up adding the gas upgrade for another $125(sears). Big, big difference in
the quality of welds. We replaced all of the exterior sheet metal and the gas
just made our life a lot easier. You get what you pay for.

For the little bit of welding I do, which is very little, I've been using an
old "arc welder", 220 Volt large box with big rotating handle.  Most of the
time I use small flux coated rods at maybe 30 to 70 amps.  Harbor Frieght has a
"regularly $200" flux welder on sale for $99.  Would that be more useful and
verstitle for welding stuff?  Especially thin stuff.  I had to repair my old
Mustang bucket seat shell with my arc welder and it was tough to keep from
simply burning holes everywhere I struck an arc due to the thinness of the
metal.
