My shim story is that my 4 speed 389 setup in my bird had a huge stack of
shims. When I replaced the flywheel I compared the OD of the ring gears on
the
old and new flywheel and the old one was about .040 bigger. The new
flywheel didn't need any shims. Both flywheels were Hayes with the same part
number. Go figure.

Paul,

I had an insane number of shims after I rebuilt my engine and decided to put

a new (rebuilt )starter on. Both starters looked identical, but the rebuilt
one needed a zillion shims. I finally decided "this can't be right" and
went back to the store and asked to see another one - once again it looked
the same, but then we got out the calipers...sure enough the measurements
were different, and even though the difference was small it made a world of
difference in the geometry of the fit against the block/flexplate. Swapped
out the starter - and I was back to zero shims. Seems like I always run
into weird stuff like this - like last week when my wife's BMW sucked a
bunch of water into the engine because BMW built a box around the power
brake booster with a tiny drain hole...that got clogged with leaves...and
then it rained...and the box filled up and imersed the booster in 8 inches
of water....and the booster itself filled with water...and the vacuum line
sucked water into the engine...aaggghh! But I digress...
