I cant answer for Sweden, but some protectionism is evident, not so much by EU i think, but also but national rules... and remember Sweden has their own cars... Sweden, at least, has virtually no taxes except VAT on cars, but here in Norway we have an INSANE system favoring tiny cars with tiny engines.

Norway taxes the car weight, the engine displacement, and the horsepower, and in a logarithmic way, ie. more money per hp/kg/cc as in increases!!!! That means for my 94 Eldo I have to pay approx. $20.000 to get plates on it here in Norway!! And that is for a car I bought for $ 4000 in Houston in August! Now, they try to hide this behind an enviremental cause, but actually it is anti- Americanism enforced by our socialist government and bureaucracy, as the tax on engine displacement is particularly high, and we all know which (only) country who produces such engines....!

The result; tiny cars with tiny engines dominate the market . However, here in Norway I think Toyota and VW competes for 1st place in sales all the time... Japanese and european cars are fairly the same amount i think...

Low quality of American cars? Not at all, compared to the price that should have been, if not taxed out of the competition!! Aslo, Our "DMV", as well as the dept og transport and finance dept, is extremely anti-American, to the level that AMCAR, our national club for all American cars regularly team up with the US Embassy, to try to fight some of these issues!!

Hansi, I was in Sweden recently and was surprised by the lack of both
American and Japanese cars being driven for normal cars. Is there some major EU protectionism going on? 99% of the cars were European. I asked one of the Swedes I was with and he said it was due to the low quality of American cars. I don't buy that due to the lack of Japanese cars also. There were quite a few classic American cars around which was cool to see. Just wondering...

Yep, indeed!
Pål(Paul in Nowegian) "Polly" Blytt in out of Bergen, on the west
coast of Norway.
He and his team is NOWHERE as funded and backed up by huge car
manufacturers than most of the "competition" of AMG and Bugatti and
all the other upper nose dinky krauts!!
But by trial and error, comparatively small funding, and a healthy
common sense he manages to whip those posh uppernoses´asses big
time!! And that he does with ancient American iron!!
Needless to say, in this part of the world he is fairly overlooked by
the motorpress as a whole, as they are more into the Gay cars of the
krauts and degoes, and always will be....
BUT; we are an enlighted and hardcore committed crowd of approx
15.000 here in Norway, and then the Swedes, and some other countries
that NEVER will lose faith in Real American Iron!
And certainly Pål is one of those who takes this commitment to a
higher level, as well as others with restorations that would have
made you all proud of us back in the old world!
He actually shipped the car over and attended a road race, with those
insane speeds, last year somewhere around Las Vegas, and did very
well there as I recall.
I think he plans to go back for 2009 as the article says. Watch out!!

I am SO proud of being a member of this community!
