You want the pinion to have a downward angle of up to 6 degrees.

What it does is try to mare the drive shaft and pinion straighten out
lifting the front end, this transfers weight to the rear tires.

 
An upward pinion angle would have the opposite effect, pulling the front end
down and 'wrapping' the housing and unloading the tires causing spin.

I am sure there are fancy digital protractors out there but the cheap sears
model will work fine.

Don’t get all hung up on half's and tenths...you are not build in a Nextel
cup car.

Or are you ?!!!

So, the rear end angle should be +2.4?  That would mean a 3.2* shim.  Maybe 
you could get the 4* shims and file or grind them down.  They're made of 
aluminum, it should be pretty easy.

P.S.  What kind of tool are you using that measures in tenths of a degree?
