The steering parts difference could very well be an engine issue. Recently I was looking at rack and pinion set-ups for first?generation Camaros and they stated they would not work on Firebirds which used a Pontiac engine. As I recall, the center link, end links, pitman arm and idler arm are different on manual cars and power steering cars. I remember converting my 69 coupe to manual (for 1/4 mile use) and that was the case but I don't recall which was which on the idler arm since it's been many years since I did the conversion.
