Wow Joel .... you and I have a lot in common. I read your blog and it
reads straight from a horror
story. In my case I trusted my Ram Air 1 68 Coupe to a shop that did
"American Muscle" cars
only (other members of the Pontiac Car Club Australia had recommended
them). To put things
in perspective the Ram Air cars from '67 and '68 are some of the rarest
Firebirds ever built ....
rarer than most Trans Am's bar '69 convertibles and some '73, '74 Super
Duty cars ..... you'd
think an "American Muscle" car place would know this.
In my case the timing was really bad ... they had a '68 Camaro in the
shop for a while before my
car arrived and the owner (of the Camaro) was getting upset ... they
eventually decided to use MY CAR as
spare parts to get a bone stock '68 Camaro out the door ... thinking I
wouldn't notice and would
just pay up (which I did for a while until I noticed my power window
harnesses from INSIDE
the car missing .... apparently that Camaro now has power windows ...).
I let them finish the
body work which should have cost nowhere near the $17,000 I paid
(remember this is
just for body work and paint ... not a completed car ... there were
complications like repairing
the firewall from a bad hit from the right, and I wanted the fafctory
stock acrylic paint (not 2 pac),
but even still ... $17K!).
Joel ... what can I say except have faith in the "universe". Australia
is pretty famous for bush
fires, and sure enough .... not 6 weeks after I took my car out of the
shop, the bushfires
came through and the whole premises were reduced to nothing but piles of
molten metal.
(large steel shed was the premises). The bad part were the other
customers. The guy was totally
uninsured, and had about 13 cars in his shop ... and some really rare
stuff ... I know there was still a
1912 Cadillac in there, a couple of rods from the 30's, a few cars from
the 40's and 50's
and then some newer stuff ... all just reduced to ... well ... if you've
never seen the heat
generated by a bush fire, you're not going to believe this but molten
steel and atoms!
This guy will get his Joel .... it's just a case of whether or not you
hear about it.
