I had overheating problems with my car before I took everything apart. I spent 
a lot of time trying to get it to run cooler. Tried lots of the same things you 
listed up. When I tore the motor down, I discovered cake layers of white 
cottage cheeze and black gummy (percipitated manganese?) crap behind the water 
pump impeller, basically constricting flow down through the diameter of a 
pencil. I don't think a good flushing would have got this crap out. It's a bit 
of work taking the water pump off to check but may be worth it. You can always 
fix the tolerances with the baffle plate while you're at it to get extra flow 
from you pump.
