Hello, Gerrit!
The only short I've found so far was the run wire to the solenoid.  The exhaust
manifold runs right next to the starter, and it looked like the wire had come
too close to the manifold.  I wrapped it and routed it away from the manifold.
After doing that the arcing between the negative battery cable and post
stopped, and the starter no longer tried to turn over the engine whenever the
negative cable touched the battery post.  How did you rewire the starter
solenoid with a relay?  I'm slowly learning the ins and outs of the electrical
system in the car.  That's definitely the system I understand least.  Thanks
for your help!

David

Hi David,

I think you should inspect the cabling. a puff of smoke - maybe another part of
the wiring is also fried causing a short somewhere? Did you find out why there
was a short anyway?

Maybe rewire the starter solenoid with a relay too? I did it; simplifies the
starting circuit, more current to the starter and saves the starter lock
(starter solenoid current does not eat the starter lock anymore).
