I think you should inspect the cabling. a puff of smoke - maybe another part of the wiring is also fried causing a short somewhere? Did you find out why there was a short anyway?
Maybe rewire the starter solenoid with a relay too? I did it; simplifies the starting circuit, more current to the starter and saves the starter lock (starter solenoid current does not eat the starter lock anymore).
