Here a schematic of a typical relay:

Normally the 12V ignition wire goes to the contact switch and then to the starter solenoid. You just take the wire from the solenoid and connect it to terminal 85 of the relay coil. The 86 terminal you connect to ground.

The you connect a wire from the relay switch 87 to the starter solenoid and the switch terminal 30 to battery 12V. This should do the trick. I had starter troubles a while ago (turned out to be the wiring inside the starter) and changed all this too. I mounted the relay on the firewall. Works for about a year now without any troubles.
