First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List

Ditto. I've driven 1st generation Firebirds 30+ years and the only overheating
came from a radiator problem. I replaced the radiator and the problem was gone.
Currently running a 0.030" over 455, balanced and decked, 99cc heads, 068 cam,
with long branch manifolds. 195 degree t'stat I think. It's mild, but has
sufficient power and runs fine on 87 octane with no overheating issues.

I think keeping the water pump divider plates and internal seals maintained
probably helps as much as anything, along with fresh 50/50 coolant. Also my
engine blocks and heads have been chemically cleaned extensively, so there's
minimal crud in the water passages. I've run a 350, 400, and two different 455s
- same experience without cooling issues. Maybe it's just blind luck, but it's
been consistent for a long time and four different Pontiac V-8s...

I have always been perplexed by that because... I don't and never have in 40
years of driving mine.
