I noticed after my rebuild the engine ran cooler too (for the few hundred miles I drove it before moving to the next step of my restoration). As other have mentioned the clearance of the water pump impellor to the backing plate is critical on these cars. I swear, I think that mod alone is worth as much as electric fans and high dollar radiators put together. The clearance on my rebuilt water pump out of the box was HUGE. Some moderately careful tapping with a hammer is all it takes. Given that Jim Hand decided to put this mod in his book at the last minute - I'd say it is notable.

I tried lots of things to improve my overheating problem but it never resolved 100%. When I tore down the engine, I found that the two sleeves that sit behind the divider plate and everything around them were gummed up with sludge. It was like a layered cake with distinct and separate black (manganese???) and white (calcium) sludge. The sleeves had about a pencil-width diameter of flow. I assume this happened from storing the car for long periods of time. Anyway, lots of different reasons for overheating. Lesson learned...don't use tap water for your 50/50 mix... at least if you have hard water like my area or high iron and manganese levels.
