Let it be known that Rotella T has changed it's formula in the past year and
a half. It now contains little or no ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl-Dithio-Phosphate).
This was the only reason for using it in the past, as diesel engines were
exempt from EPA rules. However, new diesel engines now fall under EPA
guidelines and ZDDP was virtually eliminated from Rotella. If you have a
flat tappet engine, you need to add ZDDP to your oil to prevent cam wear.
An older engine that has been run for a long time, probably is worn in to
the point where it won't matter, but an engine with a new cam and lifters
will need ZDDP added to the oil or the cam will surely go flat. The removal
of ZDDP from oils is the main reason all modern engines have roller lifters.

What type of oil is everyone using? I am running a flat tappet cam and
have been using Brad Penn but my local distributor pissed me off today
and I will not be using him any longer. Any suggestions for a good oil
that has a high enough zinc and phosphorous levels in it to keep my cam
safe?
