Bob,

Exhaust gas scavenging won't be any factor if you choke your engine with the
incorrect heads for a 455.

The more important issue is you need to be aware of what 46 heads you have.
There are 4.

Year Engine CastCode Casting# Part# StudType Intake Exhaust Volume(cc)
c...@455(approx)
---- ------ -------- -------- ----- -------- ------ ------- ---------
---------------
69 400/428 46 1.96 1.66 68
12.1:1
73 350 46 Press 1.96 1.66 89
9.9:1
74 350 GTO ?? 46 494346 Screw 2.11 1.66 89
9.9:1
74 350 46 494346 494336 Screw 1.96 1.66 98
9.2:1

IMHO, the only logical choice for a 455 with a 46 head would be the larger
valve (2.11/1.66) '74 46 heads. The others either have to small a CC (too
high compression), press-in studs, or small valves.

Thomas

Thanks Pete. The scavenging thing is very important. I plan on
using my firebird for a partial daily driver, but no racing. I am on a
limited budget and my firebird has straight pipes with cherry bombs. I
have yet to acquire a 455 donor motor and will probably be out of a 73-76
car because of cost. Though I will be using it locally and perhaps
taking a trip to Colorado hopefully, I would like it to perform with both
power and economy, regardless. My understanding of scavenging is use
of proper exhaust gas flow from intake to the tail pipe to make the enigine
run better and more smoothly. Because the #46 heads were never used on
the 455 motors, where would I find the information on the comfort zone for
those heads as to the proper scavenging.
