Okay, I checked the restart behaviour, quit Firefox and waited until
the process did end. That didn't help.

I've got it working now. I deleted the Firebug directory in my Profile/
extensions directory after I quit Firefox. Then it was gone from the
add-on list. Then I installed it anew from your website (attention:
wrong SSL certificate CN!) and now it's up and running. Seems like
usual Firefox hickup. Install worked, upgrade didn't.

Creating a new profile seems to be a common first-try, but I never
want to do that because mine is well personalised and although Firefox
profiles seem a fragile thing I somehow cannot accept that
reinstalling is the first and only measure to resolve problems...
