Wow, I just might have it working, thanks to all of you on this board. I ran an outside virus check, as recommended. For some reason, there were some viruses on an external drive I have. So I fixed that and rebooted.
Next, for whatever reason, I checked again for those extension.* and compreg.dat files. (In case anyone is wondering, they're not in a folder, but within the *.default main area. Why they didn't show up in an Windows Explorer search I have no idea.) I have two of these folders for some reason, so I deleted the files from both places. I tried to reinstall Firebug, got the same "unverified" notice and figured why not - try it one more time. It worked!!!! Again, many thanks.
