I had this same problem. I also have the "Organize Status Bar" plug-in installed (not sure if this plugin causes the problem in the first place, but it can be used to fix the problem).
I went to "Tools->Organize status bar...", and then selected fbStatusBar and clicked on the "Hide" button and clicked "OK". I then went back in, and selected the same item again and clicked on the "Show" button, and clicked "OK". This caused the Firebug icon to appear on the status bar once again.
