I also have an issue where I was unable to edit any DOM attributes or
CSS rules. I updated to 1.9a and it allowed me to edit DOM properties
and CSS rules, but the font was still quite large. I then reverted
back to 1.7.3 and it all works normally (the Firebug icon came back to
the status bar as well).
