I have Adblock Plus installed together with Firebug and I don't have any issues with the Firebug Start Button not being visible. Make sure you have the current versions of Firefox (20.0.1), Firebug (1.11.2) and Adblock Plus (2.2.3) installed. Does that fix your problem?
