I agree with the lack of correspondence between money and quality. We have
found very little (although some managerial) advantage to using Checkpoint
Firewall-1 (~$3100/mo) over OpenBSD/IPFilter (free/donation).  In fact, I
personally prefer the latter given the wide variety of old hardware lying
around that you can throw it on. 

The obvious offset of using OpenBSD is the learning curve.  But, in my
humble opinion, it is well worth it, and the default install of OpenBSD is
widely regarded as infalliable (having no known remote exploit since
1997).
