it does. just found it in the manpage:

  altscreen on|off
    If  set  to on, "alternate screen" support is enabled in virtual terminals,
    just like in xterm.  Initial setting is off.

if i set it to on it works as expected.
(now i only need to figure out how to specifically turn it off for less, and
see if i am happy to see the completion pager go away)
