Another distinct possibility is to make the up/down keys scroll more
than a single line. If they scroll something like 1/4 screen then
perhaps you wouldn't miss the 'anti-space' key so much. And scrolling
only a single line does seem kind of useless.

Of course, yet another route would be to make the completions
displayed by the pager selectable, so you could insert the whole
completion string into the commandline. Would be nice.
