I wonder if Microsoft will create patches for older versions of IE to give them HTML5 functionality?
IE6 came out in 2001 and it's still over apx. 20% of installed web browsers*! If they don't it could spell disaster for IE in the long run, but of course if they adopt it, it competes with Silverlight. So I guess Microsoft and Adobe have to either adopt HTML5, or continue to out-innovate HTML5. Both companies, pushing Flash and Silverlight, do have the advantage that they can innovate far faster and produce consistent experiences on multiple browsers and operating systems. Looking long term, I can't imagine the HTML and CSS standards can evolve as quickly and be as consistent as those platforms.
