Did you run sudo apt-get build-dep fldigi I test both here, my cpu runs 2 to 8% on a dual 3.0 32bit 9.04. Long shot.....and I mean long. Try a different font both RX/TX. Couple of years ago there was a problem with high cpu on some systems and I "think" (notice the word think) it was a font issue. But I'm not sure.
