Well, you've hit on something. I reset fldigi back to the default configuration and the CPU usage dropped down to about 13%. Then, I started changing everything back to where I started. When selecting the sound card /dev/dsp1, which is the SignaLink USB external modem, the CPU usage shot up to around 80%. I'm using port audio if that matters. I'm now trying the same thing on my laptop computer, running Ubuntu 9.10 as well. With the SignaLink selected, it's running about 80% CPU. Selecting the internal sound card, the CPU drops to about 5%. Guess it's reflecting the added usage through the USB port? At any rate, the desktop computer has developed a 'glitch'. During boot, when 'booting grub' shows up it's taking a very, very long time for the grub boot menu to shouw up. It's always possible that I caused it as I've played around with the grub menu some. I also have 2 drives on the computer with 4 Linux operating systems. I'm going to go back to a single drive with a single Ubuntu 9.10 OS and start over. :-) One thing I have plenty of is hard drives and time.
