Flex has been around longer than Flex Builder 2 and the Flex Enterprise
Services and the product name those have a firm basis (be it with a
limited target audience until recently) --  what I find more
confusing is the internal name changes Flex Builder (dreamweaver-like
IDE to Eclipse plugin), Flex that now refers to the entire framework
rather than the server etc.

Its just a matter of time before Flex gets a more prominent place in
search engines, same thing goes for Flash. You'd expect to come up with
some varied results in any searchengine based on that term but the
first 1000 or so links directly refer to Macromedia Flash.

The word Flex however is extremely generic. Flex is a stock
symbol for Flextronics, it's the name of a
popular magazine, there's a GNU project called Flex, there's a
popular TLC program called Ride with Funk Master Flex, as well as just the common
use of the word in general literature (flex your power, flex your muscles, etc…).


 

So when using google, you often
need to use "macromedia flex" in the search criteria. But that then
requires all pages to keep using the full term to incur a match, and because its tedious to keep writing "macromedia flex",
most pages/sites/articles don't.

 

Maybe the name can be tweaked slightly that still leverages
the Flex branding, but is unique enough that it doesn't refer to such a
diverse range of topics.
