My bad. I learned to do things _differently_, and while it worked it was definitely not as you would expect. I would open a new page called 'default', edit it, save it and then rename it to HomePage. I never discovered (until now) that by going from the namespace information link on the Administration Home will give a default HomePage. Proper testing will now commence.
