Right, but from what Erik says, if we make the change from the
archived message above, this will likely hose the Irix build.

Well, effectively what simgear does is pretty equivalent (minus the
make test, but who needs that, and what's a "Readme"?) :-)

Metakit (or something like it) gives us a big performance boost
balanced across initial load times and on the fly airport lookups.

Any other solution will force us to pay a big price at load time at
least.

This might be the way to go.  Given that the metakit build appears to
have issues on some platforms, it might just be a lot easier all
around to have a smart person from each platform do the work once
(already done for most linux distros) and then people won't have to
worry about that step.
