..I disagree:  a _well_ maintained source package compiles fine, 
_also_ as a rpm: 'rpm -ta $source-ball.tar.bz2', 'rpm -ba ' etc, 
if you use your own '.spec'-file, details in the "Build Options" 
section of 'info rpm'.  Installing the built rpm, is as with the
"distro vanilla" rpm's.  ;-)

..the "other source packages" you of course stuff into /usr/local 
and './configure && make && make install', './configure --help' 
is a neat '.spec'-file core start.  ;-)
