Understood but ..

The problem is there is not much room for an alpha chanel in 16 bits
so AFAIK the card manufacturers and the OpenGL board aren't
spending much effort making this kind of thing work well

most 16 bit color is 5 6 5 bits respectivly for r g b
to get any alpha this goes to 4 4 4 4,  or 4 5 4 3
< the eye is more sensitive to green >
neither of these makes a picture that helps sell more gfx cards .....

My guess is if you value your time at all,  it would be cheaper and far
less frutrating to trade up to a newer computer or ....
just drop your resolution back down to what you card can handle at
32 bit color when you want volumetric rendering

Note these things by their very nature BURN fill rate
