As it stands, FlightGear 0.9 still runs fine (without 3D clouds) at
1024x768x16bpp on an old 16MB Voodoo3 400GHz-class box I rigged up for
the kids.  For people with even older hardware, we have many ways to
speed things up, such as

  --disable-clouds
  --disable-random-objects
  --disable-panel
  --disable-hud
  --disable-sound
  --fog-fastest
  --visibility=5000
  --fov=20
  --shading=flat
  --disable-skyblend
  --disable-textures
  --enable-wireframe
  --geometry=640x480

and so on, as required.  In other words, you can turn off almost every
feature added over the past 4 years.
