I really don't understand the requirement as to having the origin at the same 
location for all the FDMs.

You and some others are convinced the origin should be at the nose.
Jon and others think that the airframe structural center should be used.

We have config files

why don't we just agree on a name to use for the origin and require that
its location be specified in the config file.

The way I see it everyone the modeller, the view pipeline programmer,
the FDM designer all have a different ideal location relative to the airframe
as to where this should be located, therefore there is no ideal solution 

FWIW it makes the most sense to me to have the origin at the center of
the bounding sphere of the model

Think about how you would describe the location of a simple box
is it the lower left corner or the top right corner -- wait a minute
which way is right and left.  

I think you use the center of the box and include the dimensions
