This is probably not a fair representation of the dilemma. The FS2.002K
problem is caused mostly by all those other aircraft being picture
perfect. If you shed 3 out of 4 polygons on the AI aircraft, they would
still look good enough, up until the time you're parked beside them, but
would stop being the frame eaters they are.

I don't have any easy answers here -- one would probably need two (or
even three) levels of detail per scenery object, and automatically drop
down the level of detail on less important scenery objects when frame
rates drop too low.

And aircraft aren't the only culprits. The Trainz train simulator
elected to have trees that look like they're made out of two cardboard
slabs just to keep the frame rates acceptable.
