On my monitor, the first screen shot looks much worse with the new
colors.  The 2nd is really no comparison becuase it is all dark.  The
new way simply eliminates any tiny amount of ambient light which
probably is not any more realistic than before.  The 3rd shot looks
nicer, but that's just the sky which you say hasn't changed.

Maybe what we need is to be able to control the r/g/b values
independently in the diffuse and ambient lookup tables so we can blend
in some orangish/redish illumination at dusk/dawn.

On my monitor (and IMO), the first shot (which is really the only one
that shows the ground with enough light to be usable to gauge the
differences) looks much worse with the new scheme.
