It certainly could.  In the past I've warned (for performance reasons)
about getting into situations where a zillion Nasal scripts expect to
run every frame, but for the single case of an autopilot it should be
OK.

In fact, you could hack one up for a prototype without any C++ code at
all.  Just write an "autopilot.update()" function that inspects
properties for input, writes its output to /controls, and registers
itself to run again via settimer().
