Vivian, for a first release I wouldn't worry too much about polygon count. If it turns out to be a serious problem, you could look at putting in the extra work to reduce the polygon count. I think it's ok for FlightGear to have a range of aircraft with varying amounts of polygons. We don't want to waste polygons needlessly, but as someone else mentioned, there are a number of simpler models available to people with less hardware power. Just like there are any number of simpler scenery areas as well.
