I don't _know_ but I very much doubt that this is true. Solaris8 has: /usr/openwin/lib/libGL.so.1* /usr/openwin/lib/libGLU.so.1* /usr/openwin/lib/libGLw.so.1* /usr/openwin/lib/libGLw.so.2* .... and I don't expect Sun to simply drop these libraries.
