ActiveX is a Windows-Only-'invention' and by using ActiveX-controls you'll lock your application to the Windows platform. If you don't want to use C/C++ you might have a look at the other languages that are being offered on both 'continents'. You have the option of using Pascal (FreePascal/Lazarus ond Unix and Delphi on Windows) or, if you like scripting languages, you could have a look at Perl or Python and the respective user interface toolkits, which are indeed real cross-platform environments.
