That sounds like a possible bug in the wildfire code. I'm sure Ron would be 
happy to fix it, thereby removing any need for disabling it in your aircraft.

That way, the F-8 will crash-and-burn on land, and sink on water. It will also
mean that you don't have to set a system-level property on an aircraft, and 
everyone will be happy.
